Job Description

Position Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Pathologist Assistant to join our team. In this vital role, you will perform gross dissection and dictation of surgical and autopsy specimens, ensuring accurate documentation and classification that supports diagnostic and research needs. Working under the guidance of the Laboratory Medical Director, Laboratory Director, and Laboratory Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining the quality and efficiency of our pathology services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive gross examination of surgical and autopsy specimens, applying your expertise to document all relevant parameters necessary for accurate assessment and classification.
  • Assist in performing complex postmortem examinations and surgical tissue dissection with precision.
  • Capture and maintain high-quality gross photographs of specimens as needed for documentation and review.
  • Handle specimens from accessioning through final processing, ensuring adherence to established protocols.
  • Maintain, update, and organize Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), supply inventories, and general maintenance of the morgue and gross room areas.
  • Ensure proper documentation by maintaining accurate logs, records, and organizational systems.
  • Participate in laboratory on-call rotations as required.
  • Support ongoing training and mentorship of new staff members, fostering a collaborative and professional environment.
  • Assist with inventory management and quality assurance to uphold high standards in specimen handling and processing.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties related to pathology operations as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Required: Graduate of a NYS-approved Pathologists’ Assistant training program or holds grandfathered training.
    • Preferred: Graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant training program.
  • Experience & Skills:

    • Proficient in specimen handling, documentation, and utilization of computerized databases.
    • Strong research, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability in time management and attention to detail.
  • Licensing & Certification:

    • Required: NYS license as a Pathologists’ Assistant or the ability to obtain licensure within one year of employment.
    • Preferred: ASCP Board Certification in Pathologists’ Assistant.

Compensation:

Rate: Competitive hourly pay of $71.00/hr
