Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
Location: Big Spring State Hospital
Assignment Duration: 6 months
Schedule: Alternating shifts to meet staffing needs; every other weekend off. Flexibility to start any day (Monday–Friday)
Workload: Minimum of 40 hours per week with 2-3 weeks of on-unit mentorship with an experienced LVN
Position Overview:
FSN is seeking an experienced and compassionate Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to join our multidisciplinary healthcare team in a state-operated psychiatric facility. The LVN will provide direct nursing care to individuals with serious mental illness and behavioral health needs while working under the direction of a Registered Nurse and within established state and facility guidelines.
This role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a structured psychiatric environment that prioritizes patient safety, recovery, and dignity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct nursing care to psychiatric patients in accordance with individualized treatment plans.
- Administer prescribed medications and monitor therapeutic and adverse medication effects.
- Observe, assess, and document patient behaviors, mental status, and physical health conditions.
- Assist with admissions, transfers, discharges, and ongoing patient evaluations.
- Monitor vital signs and report significant clinical changes to the RN, physician, or treatment team.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic health records.
- Participate in treatment team meetings and contribute to patient care planning.
- Implement infection control, safety, and crisis intervention protocols.
- Support therapeutic activities and foster a safe, recovery-oriented environment.
- Respond appropriately to psychiatric and medical emergencies.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals.
Qualifications:
- Valid LVN license in the state of employment.
- Graduate of an accredited Vocational Nursing program.
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in psychiatric, behavioral health, correctional, or inpatient healthcare settings.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Strong clinical assessment and patient monitoring skills.
- Excellent communication abilities and a team-oriented approach.
