Job Description

Flagstar Staffing is seeking certified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters with a minimum of two (2) years of professional interpreting experience to provide in-person interpreting services to the Akron Public Schools Special Education Department on a substitute, as-needed basis. Interpreters provide coverage during absences of APS staff (illness, maternity leave, military leave, and similar), maintaining uninterrupted communication access for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. All assignments are scheduled exclusively by authorized APS Special Education Department personnel and generally align with the student's school day.
Assignment Period: 2026–27 school year (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027), with district renewal options annually through June 30, 2029
Compensation:
  • $35/HR
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide accurate, in-person interpretation between American Sign Language and spoken English for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students across school settings, including classroom instruction, evaluations, IEP/ETR meetings, related-services sessions, assemblies, and parent/guardian communications
  • Step into existing student schedules as substitute coverage, maintaining continuity of communication access with minimal ramp-up
  • Accept only assignments scheduled by authorized APS Special Education Department personnel; interpreting services performed outside authorized scheduling will not be compensated under the contract
  • Perform all services within the guidelines and procedures established by the APS Director of Special Education
  • Interpret faithfully — preserving the content, tone, intent, and register of the original message — and remain impartial at all times, in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of student information and records in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and Akron Public Schools policies
  • Complete accurate daily work logs documenting date of service, building location(s), hours worked, and tasks performed, and submit them to Flagstar on schedule to support monthly contract invoicing
  • Maintain consistent professional conduct and reliability; the Board reserves the right to request replacement of an interpreter at its sole discretion

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional ASL interpreting experience
  • Current ASL interpreting certification or credential required, such as:

    • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of [3.5] or higher; or
    • Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification; or
    • A state-issued interpreter license or educational interpreter credential (e.g., Ohio Department of Education & Workforce)
  • Background clearances (mandated): Successful completion of both an Ohio BCII and an FBI fingerprint-based criminal background check.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an Interpreter Training Program (ITP) or a degree in ASL Interpretation, Deaf Studies, or a related field preferred
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel between APS building locations as assigned

Preferred Qualifications
  • K–12 educational interpreting experience, particularly in special education settings
  • Familiarity with the IEP/ETR process and school-based team collaboration
  • Working knowledge of Deaf culture and best practices in communication access

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • On-site, in-person work in K–12 school buildings during the student school day
  • Ability to sign continuously for extended periods, consistent with professional interpreting standards
