Job Description

The Medical Assistant – Ambulatory (MA-AMB) is responsible for providing clinical and administrative support within an outpatient or ambulatory care setting. The MA-AMB assists physicians, nurses, and healthcare providers with patient care, examinations, procedures, documentation, scheduling, and coordination of clinical operations while ensuring exceptional patient service and compliance with healthcare regulations and organizational standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examinations, procedures, and treatments by obtaining vital signs, medical histories, medication information, and documenting patient concerns accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Assist providers during patient examinations, minor procedures, diagnostic testing, and treatments within the ambulatory care setting.
  • Perform routine clinical tasks including specimen collection, EKGs, injections, point-of-care testing, wound care, medication administration, and other duties within scope of practice and organizational policy.
  • Provide compassionate, age-appropriate care to pediatric patients and demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with both pediatric patients and their families/caregivers.
  • Coordinate patient flow to ensure efficient clinic operations and minimize patient wait times.
  • Schedule appointments, referrals, follow-up visits, and diagnostic testing as directed by providers.
  • Maintain examination rooms, equipment, and clinical supplies in a clean, organized, and fully stocked condition.
  • Educate patients regarding treatment plans, medications, procedures, and discharge instructions under the direction of licensed healthcare providers.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, infection prevention, safety standards, and ambulatory care policies.
  • Accurately document patient interactions, procedures, and provider instructions within the EMR system.
  • Respond to patient phone calls, portal messages, and inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to support quality patient outcomes and continuity of care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Current Medical Assistant certification or registration preferred (CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, or equivalent).
  • Current BLS/CPR certification required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent pediatric (PEDS) experience required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent ambulatory, outpatient, clinic, or physician office experience preferred.
  • Experience using electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems required.

Shift: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of ambulatory care workflows and clinical procedures.
  • Strong patient service, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced outpatient environment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, infection control practices, and patient confidentiality standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with providers, nursing staff, and administrative personnel.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality patient care.
  • Experience working with pediatric patient populations and understanding of pediatric care considerations preferred.

Work Environment

This position operates primarily within ambulatory clinics, outpatient centers, physician offices, or specialty practices. Duties may require prolonged standing, walking, bending, lifting, and assisting patients throughout the workday. The MA-AMB may support multiple providers or clinic specialties as assigned.
